Doesn’t one sort of need to be from “Hispaniola” ?

Considering the etymology of the name Hispaniola I'd say it makes the case that the term Hispanic devolves directly from being of Spanish origin.

When Columbus took possession of the island in 1492, he named it Insula Hispana in Latin and La Isla EspaƱola in Spanish, both meaning "the Spanish island". Las Casas shortened the name to EspaƱola, and when Peter Martyr detailed his account of the island in Latin, he rendered its name as Hispaniola.
