Clapton was in absolute awe of Hendrix. He saw him performing in London and was totally blown away (as was every other British guitar legend). Did he hurl a racial insult at him? I dunno. By today's standards or by the standards of the late 1960s?
Clapton did have a serious problem with alcohol and drugs (who didn't) and apparently made some sort of pro-Nazi comment while inebriated at some point in the 1970s, that he's since apologized profusely over.
I have to say, the best recent thing I’ve heard on the topic that hit thr mail on thr head is Chappelle’s newest Netflix special.
