The reality is this wasn't solely on McAuliffe. Nearly the entire DEM party in DC and at the Governor's level believes the same thing. It may explain why the DEM party pretty much left McAuliffe to hang himself. They don't want the rest of the country realizing the rest of the DEMs are thinking the same.
