What happened to the furniture industry in North Carolina?

Since the turn of the 20th century, cities like Lexington, North Carolina were the furniture-making capitals of America. The area has lost 60 percent of of its manufacturing jobs, largely to Asian factories, since the 1990's.

The contents will go right to the clearance end cap at your local Wal-Mart when it washes ashore.

The good news is that it didn’t lisp to the side.

Hat tip to Gov. Inslee of Washington.

I know, right? I worked at Hertz right out of high school in NC. The BIGGEST annual event in NC was the furniture show. Rental cars were booked a year in advance. Fly in to Charlotte, drive to Hickory.

Now, I imagine, many furniture stores up in that area...sell furniture from China.

The Pacific has always been known for its calm waters

/-) lots of the time.

The straights of Juan de fuca are purported to be among the 12 most dangerous waters in the world when rough.

It remains unclear exactly what the containers contain, but according to Cornell University, “spontaneous combustibles” refer to volatile chemicals that can “spontaneously ignite in the presence of air” or even water vapor, such as white phosphorous. With such a vast swathe of the global economy relying on container shipping, wrecks can pose substantial environmental hazards, as when the MSC Napoli — pictured above — ran aground in 2007.

It’s also unknown whether the contents of the containers will pose an environmental risk, although a Canadian government representative told the Vancouver Sun that an analysis of “pollution threats and hazards” is ongoing.

The most immediate concern, though, is that a ship could hit the partially submerged containers and prompt a fire or explosion, with the US Coast Guard Navigation Center warning vessels to “exercise extreme caution” in the region.

Everybody will be doing their Christmas shopping on the shore of Vancouver Island and Dungeness Spit.

Just rummage through the flotsam and lagan and pick your presents.

“In maritime law, flotsam, jetsam, lagan, and derelict are specific kinds of shipwreck. The words have specific nautical meanings, with legal consequences in the law of admiralty and marine salvage: Flotsam is floating wreckage of a ship or its cargo. * Jetsam is part of a ship, its equipment, or its cargo that is purposely cast overboard or jettisoned to lighten the load in time of distress and is washed ashore. * Lagan is goods or wreckage that is lying on the bottom of the ocean, sometimes marked by a buoy, which can be reclaimed. * Derelict is cargo that is also on the bottom of the ocean, but which no one has any hope of reclaiming. Wikipedia”

Monitoring?

Heck, the CG is presented with perfect opportunity for gunnery practice with practical results.

Hazards to ships...removal of aforesaid falls within their charter.
