Do you remember the classic Twilight Zone episode, "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street", where fearful neighbors go insane and start attacking each other? The whole thing was engineered by aliens overlooking the town. If I were a paranoid man I might be tempted to think that has happened here in Australia. It's really bizarre what has taken place.
