Paine unreservedly supported the terror of the French revolution. You can cherry pick his writing to make it say what you want. He was roundly hated later in life. No one came to his funeral

Paine's status took a turn for the worse after he wrote The Age of Reason, which was seen as an attack on the Christian church of the time. That's when he fell out of favor with his former Founding Father associates.
