The "Not Invited to the real Tournament"?... Back in the day only thirty-two teams went to the NCAA Tournament. And regardless of what you did in the regular season, if you didn't win your conference tournament championship you didn't go to the Big Dance. That was the automatic bid. So the NIT was a big deal then.
