Wow, in 2001, he had one hell of a good cell phone. It was an Airphone. They were installed equipment on airliners back then. Quite common.

BTW, I'm getting tears in my eyes too. BTW, I remember picking up airphones on my police scanner, IIRC, they were ij the 894-902 Mc area, just above the old AMPS cellphone band and channel 83 UHF. They were in AM mode IIRC.
