Where you got confused, apparently, is that the writer decided to narrate in the present tense for something that has not yet occurred. That, and speaking of past events in the present tense, are pet peeves if mine. If only my English teachers could see me now...I have become a full-fledged Grammar Nazi.
But always remember to proof read spell checker won’t catch if substituted for of.
