It is amazing. And yes, I can see them turning tragedy into big $$$.... they already have.
Years ago I wrote a novel called Prade that I posted on line and one follow up story called Nefertiti.
In Nefertiti I actually dealt with a bit of family history of Nefertiti (not the Egyptian queen of course) where in ages past her adopted ancestor and others like him fought back against this idea that people could claim legal ownership of the substance of another’s genetic while maintaining the fiction that they didn’t own their bodies … though of course their legal rights they claimed gave them power over how others could use their property.
Sound like where we’re treading?
In the story those people were able to use a form of common law to defeat a form of administrative law that the people claiming intellectual property rights had been using to make their claims.
