Stop making the vehicles so complicated.

You would have to first change regulations that generate the complexity. Traction control, anti-lock brakes, backup cameras are all features that are effectively mandated in all new cars, and they need chips. CAFE standards also effectively make more chips required to try to wring the last mile out of every gallon regardless of its effect on cost, reliability and reparability.

I used a "gun" to time my car and adjust the points. I seldom brought the car in for service because of a dash light.

If your car/truck has points, it likely does NOT have a "check engine" or "Service soon" dashlight, an oil light when things are REALLY bad, maybe an idiot light for the generator (in GM) or to supplement the heat gauge.

Time to pull out the manufacturing plans for the old cars with no chips. They could still make those.

By the way- the EV’s are toast without chips.

“So this chip shortage is due to China flexing its muscle?”

Not really, China makes very few chips. They still don’t have the know-how for projects that complicated.

Almost all of them are coming from Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan. The problem is that building a new chip fab costs several billion dollars and takes several years. Demand increased faster than expected and there is now a persistent global shortage.

The question of why auto manufacturers have made their vehicles so electronically complex is a good one.

My view is the more gadgets they can install, the higher they can jack up the sticker price to rip us off.

They could make vehicles simpler with fewer gadgets that would not cripple their supply problem. The stripped models would be cheaper to produce but they would then have a hard time justifying the ridiculous prices they charge.

Hand crank windows, old-fashioned, manual door locks and ignition switches and fewer gadgets would be simpler and cheaper to produce. People don’t need cars talking to them and back-up video cameras and dashboard screens. They don’t need electronic tire pressure or oil change advisories.

Do you really want to go back to driving a no-chip car?

Y'know what this means? Tesla is dooooooooomed! /sarc
Tesla is working on a cheap and affordable compact car that will be manufactured in China and distributed worldwide. The battery technologies required for a compact car will be unveiled at Tesla Battery Day that will enable Tesla to make a small car for less than $25,000, possibly close to $20,000 or less. The battery cost is the main factor to drive down the cost of an electric vehicle. The compact car is coming soon after Tesla Battery Day technologies are revealed. The new batteries will allow Tesla to shrink the battery pack's size while offering enough range for everyday driving. Elon Musk's speech at the launch event in China suggests the car will be quite unique, just like the Cybertruck. A cheap electric car could accelerate EV adoption.

Well by now there's few people who would know how to repair them. That's why I mean by "Technology Trap". Maybe we could go to Cuba and find the people who maintain the cars there, I swear when Cuba is finally free those people are going to get rich.

I’m interested in a new Subaru. They actually make it with a CD player, but you’d have to order it. The sales man said if we order it, maybe we’d get it by September or October. CD players are unheard of in new cars these days.

I drive by a large Chevrolet & Cadillac dealer on my way to work every day. A couple months back, I thought maybe they had gone out of business, as there were practically NO cars in their lots (still the same).

My daughter did get a new KIA Seltos (??) a few months back, seems to like it pretty well.

I could use a new car myself, but cannot afford one, due to the incredible inflation. So I am stuck with the 10 year-old Impala. Our other car is a 2007 Camry.

You can probably have one added at one of those after-market stereo/sound system places.

I know exactly what you’re saying. Cars are also overpriced because of chips. Subaru has the Auto Stop & Start chip, which shuts the car off at a red light. I would have to disable it every time I start the car

We asked about adding the CD player later, and the dealer said it would have to go in the glove compartment if we did that.

Chips are made in China.

China used white liberal 'elite's' greed and stupidity to corner the market.

Trump was in the process of alerting the nation to the problems of Chinese control of OUR ability to remain a first world country when the election was taken from him. Next step?

Biden's going to pretend he's being tough on China (with China playing along) to hoodwink the American people into thinking 'both parties are on the same side standing up to China'... We're NOT... It's another SCAM.

Here’s an idea….build a car that’s only mechanical with only power electric!

we don’t need no stinkin’ smart cars!

It’s not a conspiracy. It’s a simple problem. There’s FAR more demand than here is production. We have seen an explosion in consumer goods that require computer chips. Things from refrigerators to automobiles all require computer chips of varying complexities.

Semiconductor fabrication plants (colloquially known as FABS in the industry), are hugely complicated pieces of technology themselves that are expensive and time consuming to build. Why aren’t there more of them in the US? Cost, specifically the regulatory cost (and to a lesser degree labor cost) of doing business in the US.
