Getting a bit picky, but I believe the term is “heavily armed” not “highly armed”.
Not sure if I've mentioned it before, but my mother was born in Picton, Prince Edward County, Ontario in 1920. Came to the U.S. as a little girl with her mother and her older brother. That part of the family emigrated to both Canada and the U.S. from England, Scotland, Holland, Norway and Sweden. I've got ancestors that were both Tories and Patriots. My Dad was born in Holland, and came to the U.S. in 1912, when he was 8, with his parents and two brothers. Tim Horton was a 2nd or 3rd cousin of mine, but I never knew it until my mother passed in 1995, and I went to Picton to research my mother's side of the family. Met cousins I never knew I had.

So, yes...they have ...what some would call....modern military weapons. Lots of people do. And all that fancy body armor, too. Most of which can be purchased by civilians. I’ve just listed a few instances where having those types of weapons either did or would have come in real handy. The sheriff in Texas, who did his job with his duty pistol, just happens to be someone that trains frequently, but even he was outgunned.
As a former cop, I’ll be the first one to bash the police for going overboard. But, as usual the peanut gallery has to say something.
Then I do not need to explain the decades long argument against militarizing the police. You are fully aware I am sure.
Folks against the militarization of law enforcement make somewhat valid points. Most of them come from folks that have never done the job and they just see it from the outside.
I can tell you from experience, as someone who once had some of that equipment, the biggest issue with it is....its used TOO MUCH.
They break it out, when a good part of the time, it doesn’t need to be broken out.
But they do need it. And there have been, are, and will continue to be times where law enforcement needs that equipment.
Our country is not getting safer. We have absolutely no idea who or what is coming over the border. Trust me, the cops are going to need that stuff.
Again.....it’s the overuse of that equipment and some of those tactics, if folks would take a deeper look at certain incidents, much more so than having the gear and using the gear.
Waco/BranchDividians....prime example....you want Koresh so bad, just do surveillance on him, wait for him to leave and do a traffic stop.
Randy Weaver....wait for him to come off his mountain to get some supplies or just go up there to talk to him, and not murder his wife and child.
Pima County Sheriff/Jose Gerena .... nothing to do with his brother dealing pot. Cops said he fired first. His weapon found with the Safety, on. Again, a simple traffic stop on his way home from work would have more than sufficed.
I agree with your points. But there is also a psychological affect. It is not just the gear, it is also a mind set change.

Both my father and my uncle were in the service and Law Enforcement. They saw it too about the time they got out. They saw it change from the mind set of “Peace Officer” to “SWAT Warrior” mentality. They both said what you say... Wrong frame of mind for the job.
