You could be right on this... underground garage... explosives... Yikes, that's certainly a possibility.
Maybe this was caused by a sinkhole? Coupled with cheap (probably Chinese) building materials?
Horrible tragedy. Prayers for everyone involved...

99% likely poor construction. Rebar corrosion and concrete compression collapse. Probably involving cheap Chinese building materials.

I have a friend who had an oceanfront condo in South Palm Beach. They were having problems because the concrete was made with ocean water and was dissolving the rebar. OMG. Did they sell it?

You’re right on this... none of ‘em have failed. None of them ‘tip’ ... pilings going down to bedrock is the norm... and yeah Florida doesn’t have sinkholes in Miami...

This building was built before the Chinese were hawking their drywall and rebar the size of chicken wire...

Apparently building had been sinking for years. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does…….

I’ll bet a dollar to a donut that the Leftists upon hearing the news of the collapse were hoping against hope that it was a Trump owned Building.
Don’t doubt me.

“Did they sell it?”
Oh, yes. This was back in the 90’s. I don’t know what ever happened with it. I should send him an email and ask if he knows how that debacle ended.

“If sea water was used, then the contractor is in trouble.”
Yes, well good luck finding anyone who was involved and is still above ground.
“The specs for concrete are always written to use potable water.”
Florida man probably reasoned that fish drink sea water so it must be potable. :-)

This building was built before the Chinese were hawking their drywall and rebar the size of chicken wire... Thanks, good point. I believe this building was built in 1981? When the awful news first broke, I thought maybe it was built in the 1990s. When did the Chinese break into our construction market?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_drywall
“Chinese drywall” refers to an environmental health issue involving defective drywall manufactured in China, imported to the United States and used in residential construction between 2001 and 2009 – affecting “an estimated 100,000 homes in more than 20 states.”[1]
They moved their inferior crap into our country big time starting around 2001
