I met a dissident who had escaped Russia. He was staying with a customer of mine.
We were replacing her well pump and the wiring that went down the well. Shielded 3 wire waterproof cable. This guy (broken English), was BLOWN AWAY by this WIRE!
“We have nothing like this in Russia, we have nothing like this in Russia”.
To us it was just wire, we bought in spools.

Back in the late 1970s I was friends with a girl whose family got out of Romania. One time her grandmother came to visit. We took her to the local Mega Mart to get groceries. When we entered the old woman grabbed a cart and started running down the aisles grabbing stuff jabbering in Romanian
I was stunned. Her granddaughter, my friend, explained to me that she was saying that it would all be gone soon so we needed to grab as much as possible. Mom explained to her that the shelves were restocked every day.
The old woman broke down in tears and kept repeating something. I asked what she was saying. My friend translated “Lies…it’s all lies.”
I was heartbroken for this poor woman knowing she’d have to return to that place soon.
