Or he could be like two uncles I had who were married to highly neurotic women. Their original personalities were wiped out and replaced with compliant subservient drones. One of my uncles suffered like that for years and years until one time I stayed over for a week's visit and told him stories about what my father (his brother) was up to and it must have reminded him of his former self. Shortly afterwards I heard a loud scream from him at the other end of the house: "OH GOD!!! I CAN'T STAND YOU ANY LONGER, SONYA!!!"
He was yelling at his neurotic wife. My other uncle passed away fairly young. I think he welcomed the eternal peace that death would finally bring him because his life was a living hell with his neurotic wife. BTW, I met his daughters recently (my cousins) after many years years of absence, and they told me they looked up to my mother as a role model because they considered their mother to be flat out NUTS.
I had an uncle like that. You described him to a T. He was totally hen pecked and brow beaten. I hated it.
