“How do you know you absolutely are not getting your rental car? “

I rent SUVs occasionally when I take the little Flashes to the Sierra. Recently I ordered a 5 seat SUV when I could have used a 7 seater. The lady at the desk asked me if I wanted to upgrade to a 7 seater for some ridiculous amount of money. I said “No.” She gave me the keys to the rental. It was a 7 seater.

What I realized was that I was always going to get the 7 seater because that’s what they had. But she had to try to get me to “upgrade” to it. If I’d have bitten, I never would have known that I was going to get it for the original price anyway.

I had almost the opposite experience: rented a high-dollar sedan for a trip from San Antonio to Colorado and back, the Colonel’s Wife wanted an SUV. We got there, no Caddy, they gave us an Infiniti SUV.. 2 miles from the place, we had a flat. Changed the tire, drove 2 miles back to Enterprise, they gave us a Mercedes SUV. Comfy, but I wouldn’t buy one.

Would you like to SUPERSIZE that order?
1 out of 4 says yes.

On the other hand, whenever I check into a hotel I always ask if they can upgrade my room. Many times they say yes. Sometimes, they say you will have to pay a little more. Not the normal price. Other times they give it to you for free if they are not too booked.
You never know unless you ask.

I remember when Northwest Airlines would let you upgrade to First Class for $50-100. It was well worth it if you were on a longer flight.
