D.C. Statehood: Not Without a Constitutional Amendment
Heritage.org ^ | 01/28/1993 | R. Hewitt Pate

Statehood proposals for the District of Columbia have been around for years. Today, however, we have a President pledged to support D.C. statehood. Congress is controlled by the Democrats, whose platform supports statehood. Eleanor Holmes Norton, the so-called non-voting delegate to the House of Representatives from D.C., has introduced a statehood proposal in the current session of Congress.1 Jesse Jackson, the "Shadow Senator” from the District, was recently arrested while leading a group of pro-statehood protesters blocking an intersection near the Capitol.2 And readers of The Washington Post received an Independence Day issue of the Post's Sunday magazine devoted to the statehood cause.3 In short, statehood matters may be coming to a head in the political arena.

What most statehood proponents ignore, however, is a fundamental question that should precede their political campaign: even if it were a good idea, can Congress make D.C. a state without a constitutional amendment? As a partisan matter, support for statehood is almost exclusively Democratic, as would be New Columbia's congressional delegation. As a constitutional matter, however, the Justice Department under both Democratic and Republican administrations has consistently agreed that statehood for the District requires a constitutional amendment; it cannot be done by mere majority vote in Congress. A review of the District's history, the terms of the Constitution, and the practicalities of making D.C. a state, reveals that statehood legislation is ill-conceived at best.

If it can be done by Congress... we’ll have Idaho and Montana separated into 30 new states after the ‘22 elections :)

and DC kicked out lol

The evil rats: We don’t need no stinkin constitution! Besides the Supreme Court would probably side with them anyway. Nothing is getting in their way of their agenda ... Absolutely nothing and they are winning! AOC Highway to Hawaii is just around the corner! Stupid is as stupid does!

Just imagine, a state that produces nothing, but leaches off of every other state in the union.

doesn't require much imagination does it?

We need some new states within these blue communist utopias. I’d like to form an Eastern Sierra state. No commies allowed. Upstate New York. Southern Illinois. The rural Nevada. Eastern Oregon. And so on. Don’t play their game or beat them at it.

Or without a Constitution, which will become the defacto reality, though the Democrats will simply deny it. Before long, it will not matter, because they will be able to tell you that night is day, etc. They already are telling us that the 2020 election was not stolen. It was.

A Supreme Court that can ignore overwhelming evidence of election fraud can easily ignore any other infraction of US law--or any violation of that pesky little Constitution thingy.

Dumb article. One the constitution is clearly a dead letter. That is beyond honest debate. So they can pass it, sign it, and it will be a fait accompli.
Second, if for some reason they want to do it in “constitutional form”, they will create the state of DC from say 90% of current DC. This allows them to say they didn’t make the capitol and white house into a state... merely some land around them.

Heritage Foundation has turned into a weak joke.

No you won’t. States splitting into extra states has to be approved by the politbureau... oops, I mean Congress. That is in that constitution.
So they will return to being strict constructionists for THAT.

I know. Not as if anything like the Constitution ever stopped them from unconstitutionality before.

At which point our side should tell them that since the left doesn’t abide by the co station, then the left can go pound sand; we are doing what we want. The ,eft tell our side all the time that they are doing what they want, it’s about time we told them the same. But of course we won’t. We abide by the .aw, the left doesn’t. They are an organized crime ring

I read the article and it said "...Jesse Jackson, the "Shadow Senator” from the District, was recently arrested while leading a group of pro-statehood protesters..."

That surprised me. I had just assumed that pathetic, race baiting, human stain waste of air had died some time ago and I just missed his demise.

So, he still wastes air.

The Soviet Union had a wonderful, idealistic, Constitution they just never followed it. So this is what the Progs want. We still have “We The People...” but it will only be for the few not the many.

The District of Columbia is just over 68 square miles. Rhode Island, our current smallest State, has an area of 1,214 miles.

Return the residential portion of D.C. to Maryland, just as a portion of D.C. that included Alexandria was returned to Virginia in 1847.

You would think that it would be easier for the left to go for Puerto Rico statehood. Easier and the same result. So why not?
