“There is nothing more painful to me at this stage in my life than to walk down the street and hear footsteps... then turn around and see somebody white and feel relieved.”
Jesse Jackson
Great quote to remember.
Here’s a true story from the late Isaac Asimov. He was walking in NYC at night and noticed more and more that two young black men staring at him from a distance. This bothered him. He tried to speed his walking pace but they slowly gained on him, and seemed to look at him but then look away if he tried to look at them.
They were younger and stronger so they finally caught up with him and he was afraid but resigned to looking for a way out rather than running.
“Excuse me” one said. “We’re sort of embarrassed to bother you but we weren’t sure. Are you really Isaac Asimov? We’re two of your biggest fans.”
