East of the river with an East St. Louis address.

I’m amazed. I’ve never heard of a ‘nice part’ of East St. Louis. A few years ago our GPS ended up sending us into East St. Louis. Nothing bad happened, but it was pretty depressing.

I know some people who moved across the river into Southern Illinois—Alexander County, county seat, Cairo. While they weren’t in Cairo itself, miles away, in fact, it got to the point where they thought they were the only taxpayers in they county and moved from their country home back into Missouri.

A lot of East St. Louis’s problems are geographical. St. Louis, MO rises up from the river, while the east side is pretty flat—basically flood plain. We have the same situation further south. Cape Girardeau, MO rises up from the river, while East Cape Girardeau, IL gets flood waters every spring.

I never said anything about a “nice part of ESL. ESL is a no-go zone. If you absolutely, positively have to go there, take a heavy SUV with five friends who are armed, determined and good shots under extreme stress.
