Defense lawyers for former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin have requested a delay and a change of venue after news broke that the city paid George Floyd’s family a record breaking $27 million settlement.
The legal team put in the request on Monday out of concern that there is no way Chauvin will face a fair trial in the city
.The trial was in the middle of jury selection when news of the settlement hit the media. Seven jurors had already been chosen.
“I am gravely concerned with the news that broke on Friday related to the civil settlement,” Eric Nelson, Chauvin’s lawyer, told Hennepin County District Judge Peter Cahill. “The fact that this came in the exact middle of jury selection is perplexing to me, your honor.”
The Hill reports that prosecutor Steve Schleicher agreed the settlement being announced last week while jury selection was happening wasn’t ideal, but countered that proceedings should continue.
“All I can say to the court is there are some things the state of Minnesota and this prosecution team can control, and there are some things it cannot control,” Schleicher said. “We cannot control the civil aspect of the case, we cannot and do not control the Minneapolis City Council, and we certainly cannot and do not control the news cycle.”

Should have been moved the first day...
$27 Large as settlement? Crime does pay after all.
Like in The Jerk where Steve Martin was going to be tried by a judge and jury , all of whom had suffered from the cross-eyed side effect of Martin’s invention under trial.
Looks bad from day one.
“Nope. The Politburo feels like this won’t impact anything. Motion denied.”
Coming later today.
He was buried in a Golden Coffin. 🙄🙄
I have never forgotten a criminal law legal expert who said in an interview "Crime pays and it pays well. It is just a myth and a cliche that it does not. It pays well."
Paying $27 million implies great wrongdoing was done.
The trial should be moved.
The Floyd family obviously retained a highly skilled attorney who had a choice to let the criminal case conclude before civil settlement.
smh
Minnesota has made it virtually impossible to change venue, so I’ve read
“Should have been moved the first day...”
I think the prosecution is trying to control how the case goes and if it is moved someplace else, they lose control. This is not about justice. It’s about getting the “right” verdict.
I don’t know how we, as a society, get around prosecutions like this. The prosecutors are elected. A successful prosecutor is in line for higher office, including governor and even president. One way of being successful is to jump on political prosecutions which garner a constituency and name recognition.
I have an acquaintance who is a somewhat successful defense attorney. His Camero SS play toy has a vanity plate that reads “Crime Pays.”
Ben Crump rolling around in the piles of cash he makes from these grifts
A wonder grave robbers haven't dug it up and sold it. Yet.
Urban types attach chains to ATMs and rip them out of stores with pickup trucks. This would merely require a stolen tow truck to pull it up. Pay the nearest security guards cash to take a marijuana break and not report they heard anything.
LOL.
They’ll blow through that money in 5 years tops.
I wonder how much Tony Timba’s family received?
appeasement is always the barbarian’s cry, and what fools always buy.
I don’t see how Chauvin could have physically killed Floyd from the videos I have seen.
The stress of the officers’ interaction with Floyd plus heavy chemical intoxication might have resulted in death.
To be fair to the guy, if I needed a lawyer, he would be among the first I would contact. He’s been an unsuccessful candidate for district attorney three times, and I think he runs for office just to let the regional lawyer guild know that he’s not scared of them.
