Went to visit family in Zagreb in 1984 when it was a socialist utopia wing of Yugoslavia. What a wake up call.

And Yugoslavia was considered the most "liberal" Communist country of the whole lot, could only imagine how it must have been in the other Communist countries.

My relative was the VP of a bank and his wife, a kindergarten teacher, and my apartment as a grad student was bigger than his!

Police were everywhere. He told me “They are there to listen.”

His parents lived in a mansion but they only had two small rooms. Their shower and phone were down the hall. It was a shocker to me.

My Grandfather went through the Bolshevik Revolution and somehow his parents got him and his brother out of Ukraine. (Their first jobs in the US were being soldiers in WWI. Don’t know how that happened.) I owe them big time.
