German shepards usually do well because of their protective instincts. At least that is what my father has found, with his two always vigilant against human and animal intruders but well-mannered with approved visitors.
They have been considering a couple of breeds in the 15-20 lb range, which I believe is too small for a rural dog. I hope they go a bit larger towards 40 or so lb.
