Except in the case of the Spanish Flu.

In that one, the strong died, the weak survived.

Actually, the fit generally survive. This has nothing to do with strength.

The Black Death of the middle ages favored the survival of people with a particular variant of an immune system component, called the MHC. As a result, this variant is rare among everyone except those of European descent.
