I’m hoping Dr. Jill becomes the surgeon general, his wife. Joe Biden’s wife. She would never do it, but, yeah, she’s a hell of a doctor. She’s an amazing doctor,” proclaimed actress and co-host of The View Whoopi Goldberg last March.
After someone alerted Whoopi to the fact that “Dr. Jill” has a doctor of education (EdD) degree from the University of Delaware and not a medical degree, Goldberg apologized. “I was wrong about his wife. I was wrong, before you start texting and emailing,” she said.
Starting with Goldberg’s slip-up in March and ending with Joseph Epstein’s Wall Street Journal op-ed asking Biden to “drop the doc” in December, Jill Biden’s ubiquitous presence on the national stage during the 2020 presidential election revived long-standing debates about the use of the “Dr.” honorific and the academic degrees that underlie it.
What does the honorific mean in an era of mass credentialing and low academic standards?
In a syrupy profile published in the spring 2007 issue of Wilmington, Delaware lifestyle magazine Brandywine Signature, Jill Biden recounts her delight after returning home from defending her dissertation and finding two signs in the yard waiting for her: “Congratulations Dr. Jacobs-Biden” and “Dr. and Senator Biden Live Here.”
Everywhere the Bidens traveled, the titles went with them. Presumably, Senator Biden’s team considered Dr. Jill’s honorific to be so politically expedient that it became a prominent feature of every one of his campaigns, starting with his unsuccessful attempt to obtain the Democratic nomination for president in 2008. Until recently, only one writer dared to question their comically excessive use of the title.
In early 2009, Los Angeles Times opinion columnist Robin Abcarian noticed that campaign news releases and subsequent White House announcements persistently referred to her as “Dr. Jill Biden.”

Whoppie needs to go back to the ghetto. And take the trash from the view with her. Not only is her stupidity front and center, but also her hypocricy. We listened for 4 years how Trump was allowing his family to hold positions in the WH, and the attacks they made about personal gain. Which were lies.
Excellent!
Hey!
I had a friend (may she rest in peace) who had 3 master’s degrees in 3 separate fields. We always jokingly called her master master master.
I regrettably started an EdD program and quit in utter disgust after a few classes. The academic rigor of the “doctoral” level classes was a joke. I had wanted to do serious research on the effectiveness of various distance learning technologies, but found the faculty totally clueless about distance learning and especially the use of technology. Sadly these same academics are now directing the new distance learning paradigm to the total detriment of our kids.
My brother-in-law has a PhD from MIT. It’s in Naval Architecture. He graduated from the Naval Academy and the Navy paid for his PhD. He’s a smart dude, got a 1600 on his SATs back when they were still hard in the 1980’s.
I tease him all the time by calling him “doctor”. Usually its something like - “Hey doctor, my tax dollars paid for you to design aircraft carriers and nuclear subs. What the hell?”
I say this because he left the Navy the exact instant he could and is now a hedge fund manager.
He makes great bank and is a staunch conservative. So Navy pukes aren’t all bad...
Press How do explain transgenderism
Joe: Transgenderism is a tax credit anybody can get.
Press: What about OAC and socialism?
Joes: AOC will be taking the place of Ruth Ginsburg. She’s got that same scrawny build and got those crazy eyes that Stalin had.
Press: But AOC is not even a lawyer!
Joe: My wife Jill can make her a lawyer. Jill has a direct in with the powers and principalities of the world. I wake and say, “Where am I, man?”
Press: What powers of the world... it sounds Satanic.
Joes; She has a doctor degree in Hot Yoga and listens to Tommy James and the Shondells backwards. I don’t personally understand it... I go to the Catholic Church. But Jill is a Virgo and is very wise on these matters.
Press: What does she wear?
Joe: She wears 70s hot pants with Rick James on it.
Press: The Super Freak guy.
Joe: Watch your language, bub.
“Dr. Ben Lurkin”
THAT is one cool cinema bad guy name.
The next Arch Enemy of THE AVENGERS!!!
At least consider it. If you have a DOCTORATE you are justified in calling yourself doctor. It is nothing more than an academic title derived from the Latin verb docēre ‘to teach’.
A blast from the past
:)
It began in the 13th century. It’s an academic title that originates from the Latin verb docēre ‘to teach’. It’s the medical world that usurped the term.
I had a friend (may she rest in peace) who had 3 master’s degrees in 3 separate fields.
We know a woman, not anyone’s friend, who has 3 so called Doctor’s degrees whatever. She is a complete Snob!
She shared an office (random not by choice) with a friend who had a BS degree in Business from a good west coast university.
He would introduced me to Her High and Mighty as Dr.,Dr,,Dr. as Master Dave! It drove her royal butt up the wall.
Her husband with a real PHD in science is a great guy, we called him Dr John in front of her and John when she wasn’t around.
Yes, Dr. Lurkin!
I refused to spend the extra year earning a PhD. Did not want to be known as Dr. I was more interested in working with my father.
I have a Ph.D. in chemistry. In the last 10 of my working years, I taught high school Chemistry, Math, Spanish, andd Bible courses. I used the Doctor title for two reasons.
First, to teach my students respect for genuine expertise, along with an understanding of the fun challenge of seeking truth. I taught them to challenge expertise, including mine, to be certain it is genuine.
Second, I confess without shame, to load the deck in my interactions with parents — in 10 years I had only one interaction where I felt felt the parents weren’t satisfied.
Actually, that was a kind of humorous discussion with the parents. They met with me, complaining that I was making the course in (remedial) Algebra I too difficult. After a long civilized discussion about what I could do, I could see they would never be placated. So, with as gentle and sincere a voice as possible, I revealed that I had abandoned the exercises in the textbook as hopelessly too much for the students and was using the outline from “Algebra for Dummies.” That pretty much sealed the conversation. The parents didn’t leave happy, but there was nowhere else to go with the problem.
Don’t blame you. Lol. Congratulations by the way. Chemistry is not an easy subject.
Totally agree. I know several people who hold an EdD because it was the easiest path to a pay raise.
In the 13th century people lived in mud huts, and burned witches alive at the stake. Times have changed. Using Dr. outside of an academic setting when you are not an MD or DO is just plain pretentious.
