I believe that the best defense is that it is unconstitutional to impeach a private citizen! No need to get into “the rigged election”, which all too many dismiss as a “conspiracy theory”. And that’s exactly what the Dims intend to use to get Trump impeached and barred from running for Federal office!
I do hope, however, that undeniable proof of the rigged election comes out over the course of 2021, leaving the new administration with egg on its face!!!!

What about a defense that shows there is insignificant evidence that he incited the riot, and there is stronger evidence that others including some politicians facilitated the riot (actually non-riot)?

Well, you may be right - probably not, because there is plenty of English precedent back to the 1500s, most of the people who were impeached in the Commons were what you would call today “private citizens”.
But that’s not the case here. Trump was impeached when he was President. BARELY President, true - but President.

The impeachment is done. It needs only to be tried. Only the Senate can try it.
