For protection I’d prefer an automatic. The filled magazine can be removed from the gun for safety purposes.

I would challenge that thinking.
I say it’s very hard to beat a revolver for home defense.
Sure you wont get 15 rounds but unless you leave a round in the pipe, the fumbling around in the dark trying to rack the slide could be your life.
Even if you do leave it loaded, semi’s can jam which likely wont ever happen with a trusty revolver.
