In December, Saab announced that it delivered the second Gotland-class submarine to the Swedish Defense Material Administration (FMV) after a mid-life upgrade. Along with the lead boat of the class, the Swedish Navy operates three of the diesel-electric submarines, which were designed and built by Kockums shipyard. Designed as a multirole submarine, the Gotland-class could be used in anti-surface warfare (ASuW), anti-submarine warfare (ASW), collection of intelligence including communications intelligence (COMINT) and electronic signals intelligence (ELINT), as well as forward surveillance, special operations and mine laying – the submarines have proven to be well-suited to each.
Why So Special?
The first submarines in the world to feature a Stirling engine air-independent propulsion (AIP) system, these have an extended endurance of weeks – a capability that had previously only been available in nuclear-powered submarines.

Sank. It is “sank”.
Off my grammar soapbox.
Sank. It is “sank”.

That’s what I thunk.
If the propulsion system is that great and we can save considerable cost over nuclear, why haven’t we adopted it?
Lots of countries have AIP
Because the only thing that limits nukes is food.
I could tell ya but I would have to kill ya.
Change systems? Disrupt political patronage and cash flow? There is no profit in that!
There is also the possibility, maybe likelihood that the US tracked the Swedes all the way in their approach to the carrier and just never let on that they were discovered. Let our enemies invest in technology that we already can defeat.
True..... not all force must be projected across the world.
Some of our sub fleet would be close to home. and we could produce a large number of these at a much-reduced cost with very little loss in effectiveness...
If the Military Industrial Complex is known for anything it's saving the taxpayer lots of money, right?
LOL, Silly me......What was I thinking?
Next month I think I’ll head to Pakistan to conduct Transgender studies, heard they pay well........
SSX Stingray is a design concept that is basically a super Kilo. We also looked at a 209 concept from Germany. I think the US should have 20-30 SS subs in our inventory close into the US.
Nah. You just troll some lines out the torpedo tubes.
Subs a so yesterday technology. Satellites have tracked their ever move for 50 years.
Not sure if we still operate diesel boats, I have worked them, 6 men died on the last one I was on when the batterys exploded. I was not onboard but some of my shipmates were.
Oh the smell of diesel and amine....
No more diesel subs in the fleet, the last one was decommissioned in the 90’s.....
USS Bonefish?
