Marinus van der Lubbe was a Dutch half wit who was the fall guy for the Reichstag fire. Some histories have him being apprehened in or near the building, supposedly carrying incendiary materials others say he was loudly boasting at times about having started the fire.

In any event after a raucous show trial in which van der Lubbe was railroaded into a death sentence he was beheaded for the crime. No one was ever actually tried for starting the fire although most historians believe Hermann Goering was behind the whole thing.
