No, they really sound like that. It is an unmistakable sound, but not the deterrent it has been lauded. The next sound it makes, however....
If the bad guy can hear the shotgun racking, you are too late, you'll never hear the 9MM round going up your nose, or hitting you in the X ring.
Every time I read about the racking sound, I think about people not being prepared to defend themselves.
Not enough training, not enough practice at the range, and NO situational awareness.
If it's your bedroom, and you are racking a shotgun so the bad guy can hear it and get scared away, good luck with that tactic.
I'd rather by aiming my 357 at the bedroom door and waiting, quietly, while the bad guy is racking and hacking and banging on the door and has no idea where I am.
