The 1776 patriots had 40-45% popular support. 20% sided with Britain. The rest of their countrymen just tried to stay out of it. 40-45%. And what percentage of them were willing to actually fight and die for THEIR cause? What percentage would be willing to fight and die for this cause? 1%? 0.5%? 0.1%? Even less?

I’ve never heard those high numbers. I have always used 30% backed the patriots, 10% were active participants, but only 3% started out as patriots. The other 70% were Tories who backed the crown.
I think we have the same breakdown today.
