No one will ever say “Win this one for El Rushbo”.
I met him when he first moved to Palm Beach and joined a club I was working at. I ended up giving him a couple of golf lessons and even played w/ him at Seminole one time. He was a nervous wreck - I don’t think he finished a hole because he was so bad, and pace of play is everything there.
People don’t realize how humble and timid he is - until he’s in his wheelhouse. At this point he had just taken up golf, and it scared him to death. But he conquered it.
I got out of the golf biz and saw him years later at his compound one day and he acted like he saw an old friend. He bragged about how much I helped him overcome some fears and how he was playing in pro-ams in front of thousands w/out worries.
When he started, we used to have to go to the back of the range because he didn’t want any other members watching his failures.
Special guy. Other than maybe ONJ (for obvious reasons) probably the nicest celeb I’ve ever met.
