Is Your Hisense TV (Partially Owned By The CCP) A Threat?

Throughout the last year, there’s been a great deal of rancor related to Chinese-owned tech companies that do business in the United States. The Trump administration spent the better part of 2020 attempting to ban the Chinese-owned TikTok. The U.S. government has also devoted energies in recent years to cracking down on Chinese-made smartphone manufacturers Huawei and ZTE, with the FCC, last summer, declaring both companies threats to national security.

More recently, security researchers discovered what they described as a “Chinese backdoor” in TCL’s Android TVs that are sold in the United States. The acting secretary of homeland security, Chad Wolf, said in a recent speech that TCL had “incorporated backdoors into all of its TV sets exposing users to cyber breaches and data exfiltration,” although there’s been no evidence presented that TCL has done so with its Roku TVs in the United States, which are much more popular than its Android models.

Maybe I should put up a picture of Harris and Biden for the TV to see and beam back to headquarters.

Plausible deniability.

Hell, at this point, I'm pretty sure my electric toothbrush signals back to China that I don't use it ...

I have dentures

Should I be worried ?

What kind of information do those TVs send back? Logins for Netflix? Viewing history? They don’t have microphones or cameras built in, do they?

IIRC, assuming they’re hooked up to your router, they can access every device (computer, smartphone) connected to that router.

Electronics with voice or hand gesture features are watching or they would not work. I am not sure how far the data goes from there.

You ever try to get around in the menus of those Chinese TV’s? It is not a whole lot of fun.

If it’s chinese, and hooked to the internet, it’s capable of spying. Often they build it in, and figure out what to do with it later.

If it’s on the internet, it can see all traffic in your house in that side of any firewall (router). Just sniffing away, awaiting commands from some remote server. Sometimes calling home with info—MAC adresses, channels watched, other connected devices... it’s a hacker’s dream, awaiting.

And. It’s. Everywhere. They really are that smart, and planned it out for 20 years.

I work with embedded systems and there is a Chinese part that has become ubiquitous due to its unbelievable low cost.

It is called the ESP8266 and I just bought a bunch of them for 1.10 each and that includes shipping from China.

It is a 32bit processor with 4mb of flash memory and has wifi on board.

A guy on Hack-A-Day opened up one of those smart light bulbs and this part was what gave it internet connectivity...they are in bulbs, thermostats, doorbells...you name it, they are there.

I have no idea what they might be up to but I'm concerned.
