Among the great battles fought in Academe during the decade following the end of WWII was the role played by Owen Lattimore and the Institute of Pacific Relations. Communists and fellow-travelers fought like hell to save Lattimore and the IPR from the evil Right. The Left has never conceded that they were anything more than democracy-loving patriots.
