The family roots/hearts are in/with China. The only reason she was born in Taiwan because her parents fled there at the tail end of the Chinese Civil war. Elaine's dad moved to the US and family followed around 2 years or so after that.

The family probably cares little about Taiwan independence since the company her dad founded work closely with the CPC.
