When a freshman in the dorms, I was hanging around some with a girl that was majoring in education. We were doing homework together and she was she was agonizing over an assignment that I took a look at. I swear, it went like this!

You have 2 oranges, 1 apple and 4 monkeys. How many pieces of fruit are there?

I-could-not-deal-with-it. She and I did not make it to the dating stage. I went on to degrees in microbiology first then chemical engineering. Notta doctor.

I was ready for a change in direction for my career after 10 years and the most radical thing I considered was teaching science and math. I looked into it and found I was “unqualified” and could not get a teaching certification without an education degree. No thanks.

I got a hard pitch from 2 profs while I was a freshman to switch to a political science major. One was my Spanish prof and the other my poly sci prof. They pitched a full ride undergrad scholarship and a study abroad year at a Mexican university. Looking back at it later, I figger if I had gone that route, my career path likely would have been a PhD degree and with some 3-letter agency.
