The only reason to have modems, is to connect the devices to networks.

But I think we are past having to show that they were connected to the Internet.

Not necessarily. An old style modem can provide direct and restricted dial-in access for perps, and newer modems can do as you say without requiring “network” access. I wonder how many peeps would still know how to interact with a rudimentary modem!

It's a CELLULAR modem. A device that adds 3G or 4G (LTE) cellular connectivity to laptops, desktop computers and various tablets. No other network required for Internet access.
