To play devil's advocate here, is it possible that turnout was higher because mail in ballots made it easier? In other words, Biden won the "lazy vote"?
Of course, the counter to this would be that the high turn out just happened to be in the largest cities of the most crucial swing states. The votes poured in at 4:00 am after a pause in counting, and that none of this happened in the safe, non-swing states.

Undoubtedly, Biden picked up a lot of votes for this reason, even extending down into a bunch of what would typically be considered his base. That still doesn’t account for the distributions. It would have been a much more generalized improvement without edges.
