I’ve seen several explanations of what the term means in reference to the gaslights in the house, and none of them so far match the understanding I got when I watched the movie (the one with Ingrid Bergman).
The husband does not turn down the gas in the lights just to lie about it. The husband tricks the wife into thinking she it crazy so that when she DOES notice the gas going down, he can also say that was an illusion.
The gas goes down because he has turned it on in the attic. He targeted her for her wealth which is hidden in the attic. So when he attempts to look for it, he doesn’t want her to catch on. Smart guy; he tricked his wife into writing off the one thing she might notice about his shenanigans. THAT is what makes gaslighting so insidious and scary - it’s not usually about the thing itself, it’s about getting the person to doubt all things wholesale.
I think the term is very useful.
When I saw this movie, it freaked me out to know how simple it is to manipulate someone’s perception of reality.
You’re right. Let’s start calling it “LED Lighting” instead.
The only thing that breaks her out of the manipulation is an outside party who can confirm she is perceiving things correctly.
We need each other to stay sane....
Maybe, but only after we have a talk about “On steroids”.
Pay attention, genius. I said it was WHOLLY CONTRIVED. Do you know what "contrived" means?
Ha ha! True! I'm also now seeing "instant karma" a lot.
OK, Karen!
; )
I agree. ‘Lying’ doesn’t go far enough in describing the overall campaign of manipulation and imposing self-doubt on a person...or body of people.
Propaganda may be a suitable alternate. But that’s generally reserved for mind-changing operations by the state on its subjects. Election stealing and telling the people not to believe their lyin’ eyes is beyond propaganda.
Psychological warfare may also be applicable. But that pits the subject of the warfare as ‘the enemy.’ The Deep State wants us to be docile, ignorant, and useful idiots, not their prisoners of war.
‘Gaslighting’ is, in my opinion, the best word we have to describe the manipulation until a better gains traction.
HEY! Don't try to gaslight me, mister!
“Can we ban this archaic phrase(sic) from FR?”
No. Why should I give it up the term “gaslighting”?
It is a very useful word - a nice quick way of expressing an all-to-common phenomenon that would otherwise take many words to explain.
David’s synopsis is a very timely reminder - there is so much gaslighting going on right now that my wife and I find ourselves acknowledging it a half dozen times a day.
Most conservatives have known about Leftist gaslighting our whole lives - yet we still need to reassure ourselves we are not crazy - it’s not a bad thing.
I have recently noticed some young people are using ‘gaslighting’ word like they use ‘racist’. They either don’t understand the word or intentionally misusing it to try to shut people up. So really, it is a good thing we are educating people on what it means.
Very true
Few people use the term ‘gaslighting.’ You’re exagerating how often it’s being used. Seeing it here on a thread on FReeRepublic is no indication of its wide-spread use.
This thread is proof. The number of people here actually discussing it is tiny —infinitesimally small—compared to the number of people on the internet. You shouldn’t be so concerned that anyone is gaslighting you.
;-)
Now THAT was gaslighting! :-D
I agree. The movie, “Gaslight” (1944) is fantastic. The analogy is very appropriate.
“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious People. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” -John Adams
More like 250 million, but who's counting?
That's YOUR "presumption", not mine. I'm very well read and it's a word that has been trending for months now. Also, Brady, what does "LS" stand for, if it's not too personal? 🤔
Oops! Good catch!
Have you ever personally been gaslit, or the subject of a gaslighting attempt?
I hope not because I, myself, am very gassy and the whole place would blow!
