Right and apart from all the ghastly material deficits socialism brings....it is (like ALL totalitarian systems) completely de humanizing.

I still remember when our neighbor (Hungarian) was host to relatives who arrived in the US after the brief Communist revolt in the 60’s.

My mom and all of us extended our hospitality to them because they got out of Hungary with nothing more than their lives. I especially recall the older man whose blasted spirit was obvious in his eyes. He was a broken man and God know what he saw and experienced.

The younger man, his son, went with my mother to the grocery store one day and she told me he had tears in his eyes when he stopped in front of the produce and butcher sections. She thought he was ill but he told her that he couldn't believe the ready abundance of everything.

I remember his daughter who was a beautiful girl and smart as tacs too. She was a terrific student and went on to college, working all the time.

I knew a Russian woman in the 1980’s who was sure she had been taken to a fancy grocery store for American elite party members because it was so impressive - it was a trashy Winn Dixie in Florida...
