In college I hired The Happenings to perform at lunchtime in our cafeteria. That would have been in the 70’s. At that time “older bands” were not charging that much for a gig.

Yes. I saw the Shirelle’s back in 1971 at a USAF base I was serving at. They were doing USO (thank you Shirelles!). All their hits. Small crowd, I was in the front row. Best concert of my life and I have seen the best!
