I believe you are correct. The shit hasn’t even begun to hit the fan. When it does, this will look like a skirmish.
The thing is, they aren't protesting. They are looking to attack and do damage. There is a difference. As such, you need to put yourself in a position to defend. You can't do it very well standing in a public street. You need to be somewhere you have the legal advantage.

I don't know. I think people should be responsible for their own choices. I personally wouldn't venture into a hot zone, but I also don't want the cops directing where I can't go. The guy that got shot didn't have very good situational awareness. The shooter was working with a team, including a guy who was provoking emotional reaction. get emotional, and your guard goes down. Dangerous.
I really doubt justice comes in this case. Do NOT count on the law to help. Jury there is going to acquit ANTIFA, just as sure as OJ.

Dead guy is the largish-build fellow with brimmed camo hat. Shooter had gun drawn before mace was opened up. I’d guess about eight feet between the macer and the shooter.
