Slight correction. Manned heavier than air flight was born and developed in Dayton Ohio. It was first tested in North Carolina. Subsequent testing took place in Ohio.
I once saw a writeup to the effect of (but much more extensive) “Ohio provided the engineering, manufacturing, financing... for the first powered heavier-than-air flight. North Carolina provided the wind.”
