How was James Fields railroaded? I thought it was solidly established that he rammed his car into the crowd, inspired by neo-Nazi hatred. Is there something I am not aware of?

What I've heard in his defense is that he wasn't deliberately ramming the crowd - he was trying to escape a mob that was attacking his car, including at least one person with a gun. He supposedly accelerated to get away. The girl that died wasn't even directly struck by him if I recall correctly - she was struck by a car that he hit.

Heather Heyer wasn’t struck by any car. She was on the sidewalk, and suffered a heart attack after witnessing the car accident. A morbidly obese chainsmoker, she died from her own poor life choices.
