Francs-tireurs (pronounced [fʁɑ̃.ti.ʁʁ], French for "free shooters") were irregular military formations deployed by France during the early stages of the Franco-Prussian War (187071). The term was revived and used by partisans to name two major French Resistance movements set up to fight against the Germans during World War II.[1]
The article does note that one of the French resistance groups was communist-inspired. However, if a real 'worst case scenario' ever developed in these United States, the term "free shooter" would probably prove to be an accurate description for many patriotic Americans...
