Yes, I remember the Sandlers. I was a depositor at their S&L, World Savings. What a Ponzi scheme they were running. They built up their reserves by offering savers industry-leading interest rates on their deposits. They then lent out the money on funny-money interest-only negative amortization loans building up a ginormous portfolio of such loans... then off-loading the whole operation on a bunch of suckers at Wachovia Bank for $25 billion. Billion with a B. Of course, within two years, the Sandlers’ scam loan portfolio brought Wachovia to the brink of failure... resulting in government-brokered merger with Wells Fargo intended to head off a national economic catastrophe.
