Arizona: See a COVID violation? Health departments want to know (Prescott Valley AZ mayor replies)
The Daily Courier ^ | August 27, 2020 | Howard Fischer

State health officials are looking to Arizonans to snitch on businesses that aren’t complying with safe operating procedures.

The request Wednesday, Aug. 26, comes as several Arizona counties are expected to reach the point on Thursday that previously closed businesses can again welcome customers; Yavapai County achieved that last week.

But those new permissions come with restrictions on everything from who has to wear a mask to how many patrons can be allowed in at any one time. And so now the Department of Health Services wants anyone who sees an errant business to contact that agency or other state or local officials.

Spokesman Steve Elliott said his agency is contracting with most local public health departments to investigate complaints and enforce the requirements of the various executive orders issued by Gov. Doug Ducey. For counties that don’t contract with the state, health inspectors themselves will go out to take a look.

Those inquiries, he said, will involve not only observation of how a business is operating but also interviews with customers and employees.

From Prescott Valley mayor Kell Palguta:

There was an article in today's Prescott Courier encouraging citizens to report businesses, restaurants, churches, gyms etc to the State Health Department if citizens witness employees, customers, fellow worshipers not properly wearing a mask or keeping six feet away. This is unbelievable to even consider 4 months ago let alone today.

This is not what America should look like and is certainly not the values of Prescott Valley. The numbers and facts do not lie. Hospitalizations due to COVID are at an all time low since May 1st. Yavapai County is the second lowest infection rate in all of Arizona. Prescott Valley residents of all ages continue to be safe and healthy by taking appropriate steps necessary to make it through these unprecedented times.

Please note that the Prescott Valley Police Department will NOT be responding to any of these types of calls and that my office will not be taking any "formal complaints."

There is no data suggesting I will catch COVID by standing next to someone for 10 seconds to take a picture. Nor is there data that says I will catch COVID by using a treadmill immediately after another person or walking past someone in the opposite direction down a grocery aisle. Or God forbid I shake someone's hand, look them in the eye and greet them accordingly like I was taught to since the age of 6. Please go and enjoy life like we did in 2019.

As a customer I do not have the slightest responsibility to speak to any member of the health gestapo.

They must be taking a cue from Maryland.

Lockdown Larry has put in place a “snitch” line, with a similar intent as Arizona.

The daily deaths figure just got goosed up for Arizona when the ADHS “enhanced their processes” for reporting Covid-19 deaths after being prodded by the Feds. The document provided by the Feds showed how to discover that Covid-19 was really the underlying cause of death even when you couldn’t prove it. A strong conjecture was enough to add to the statistics.

However the Adult ICU bed usage is still going down and it is at a level matching early April when everything was just ramping up.

At peak, on July 13, there were 970 ICU beds being used by Covid-19 cases. That represented 57% of capacity.

The current ICU bed usage is 270 beds representing 16% of capacity and is dwarfed by ICU bed usage due to other causes. The last time Covid-19 hospital bed usage was this low was April 13.

Hooray for Mayor Palguta. If all our elected officials had his common sense, we’d be almost back to normal.

“Hooray for Mayor Palguta. If all our elected officials had his common sense, we’d be almost back to normal.”

Palguta lives in my neighborhood. He’s a retired Prescott Valley police officer, and a pro-growth, Trump, and Second Amendment supporter.

As mayor, he backed a resident for flying the Trump flag against a town ordinance last year. Now everyone is flying Trump flags.

I’m pretty much done with Arizona. I have a winter house in Pima County and the there is that masks will be required there for at least another year. So next fall our winter house goes on the market. Pima County is a DemocRAT run s**thole and I just don’t see anything getting any better.

Thanks for responding to my post. Earlier, I did a quick search about your mayor and found out he was a retired LEO, now into real estate, I believe.

Wish we had more like him.

Suggestion: The callers’ information should be part of the record. FOIA/FOIL the IDs of the callers. In NYS we have a lot of citizens informing on other citizens. In many cases its business owners ratting out or making trouble for competitors, neighbors harassing neighbors, family going after family.

If the caller’s info is public record, that will cut down on abuse.
