SYDNEY - As countries scramble to test for the novel coronavirus, a Chinese company has become a go-to name around the world.
BGI Group, described in one 2015 study as “Goliath” in the fast-growing field of genomics research, is using an opening created by the pandemic to expand its footprint globally.

***In the past six months, it says it has sold 35 million rapid COVID-19 testing kits to 180 countries and built 58 labs in 18 countries. Some of the equipment has been donated by BGI’s philanthropic arm, promoted by China’s embassies in an extension of China’s virus diplomacy...

As Ontario, Canada prepares to open schools for children in September, Ontario’s Associate Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Barbara Yaffe warned against mass testing for the COVID-19 China coronavirus, saying it takes resources from other needed areas and does not “actually achieve anything.” Dr. Yaffe also said that in areas with low incidences of COVID infection, the rate for false positive test results is “almost half.”...
Yaffe: “You know, I think a lot of people think that testing is going to really solve the whole problem, and it isn’t. It’s one component of a response. If you test somebody today, uh, you only know if they’re infected today. And in fact if you’re testing in a population that doesn’t have very much COVID, you’ll get false positives almost half the time. That is the person actually doesn’t have COVID, they have something else, they may have nothing. Uh, so it will just complicate the picture.”...

14 May: Global Times: Canada receives key COVID-19 testing equipment donation from China

According to Chinese project contractor BGI Group, it will raise the Canadian facility’s daily testing throughput to 2,000 samples and support the urgent need for additional testing capacity in Ontario.
The southern Chinese city’s donation to Canada is being made via the Shenzhen-based Mammoth Foundation, and as a founding member of the foundation, the Chinese genomics BGI Group will be in charge of installation, training and logistics support, BGI told the Global Times on Thursday...
BGI also provides an emergency COVID-19 detection lab called Huo-Yan Laboratory, with P2 level biosafety protection and robots that can be quickly deployed around the world.
The first Huo-Yan lab was built in Wuhan in February in one week, providing testing capability of up to 20,000 samples per day. Such labs have since been built in the United Arab Emirates, Brunei, Serbia and Australia...

26 Aug: Daily Mail: Sweden uncovers 3,700 false positives from faulty Chinese-made coronavirus test kits
•Sweden said the PCR kits were from a Chinese company called BGI Genomics
•The testing kits were used by Swedes between the months of March and August
•Mostly, ‘people who had mild symptoms or who didn’t feel any symptoms at the time of the test received false positive results,’ the public health agency said

The agency said the PCR kits, which test for an ongoing COVID-19 infection, were made in China by the company BGI Genomics and had been distributed worldwide.

In Sweden, the kits were used by people conducting at-home tests between period March and August, the agency said...
