To the blog pimps, "no, this is not my blog."

To the paragraph police, "here's one you'll like."

As a former NYer, I have been wondering a lot lately if the City can be revived, given that remote work and learning is now available and feasible.

I thought this writer covered a lot of good points on that issue.

My oldest sister lives in Manhattan. She’s planning on moving upstate. I’ve offered to have her moved to a piece of land that I own close by but she’s a New Yorker. It’s hard for her to go from big city to rural. I hope I don’t have to go rescue her but I would.

Places like Chicago, NYC, Baltimore, Seattle, Portland and LA are in big trouble. They have Democratic supermajorities and their policies keep on forcing people with common sense out. So all the remaining voters are rabid lefties. Which means the crazy just keeps getting crazier. Wash, rinse and repeat — it is a vicious circle

In the end, they will all end up like Detroit - or worse.

Now he lives in Phoenix, Arizona. “As of June,” he told me, “I had never even been to Phoenix.” And then he moved there. He does all his meetings on Zoom....

Perception. Business needed the prestige address for credibility. Now, folks understand you need to use MS Teams and work remotely. Goodbye $$$$ overhead

This is in today’s New York Post, one of the few papers that (mostly) tells it like it is.

2020 real life Escape from New York or #1 Blade Runner?

Enjoy you dystopia...or as Yogi Berra (great NYY catcher) would say, “It’s like deja vu all over again”.

The smart money is/will be buying up property in NYC. You don’t see 50-60%-off deals very often.
NYC will be back - and big time. You can’t discount the infrastructure investment. You can’t overlook that at its darkest point there won’t be a tax-cutting, law-and-order Rudy II, by which time the perfumed-punk anarchists will have moved on to the next cause.
This too will pass.

One more thing...sideways brain thinking again...my daughter came up to me at poolside and said, “dad you gotta hear this song”...I reminded that to her the other night when she was over with her family because the grandkids love the song...(4 cranes walking outside window as I type making their prehistoric call). Circling back...friend Aaron made the video (Nick’s best man)...I taught in school (sub only)...and worked with Aaron at big box store...great, multi-talented man. Julie was one of my daughter’s great friends. What a vacation (I recommend it...you’ve worked hard...YOU deserve it). What a great life. Enjoy it. It goes by fast.

The writer put us through a lot of verbiage before giving the underlying reason: bandwidth.

For those that quit reading before getting to “bandwidth”, he means working remotely has become widely feasible because of our very speedy internet. No need for commuting, high cost of living, bad things associated with large cities. So people will move to smaller towns.

But the counter-argument is that people come to New York because of the excitement, etc., that exists because it is a melting pot and cultural center.

New York would benefit by a reduction in population and cost of living, but that’s all that will happen in my opinion.

Long ago I read a SciFi book that had the idea people figured out how to teleport. They could “beam me up Scotty” to anywhere from anywhere. It changed city life to where there were only a few of them left. Far fewer people lived in cities, attracted by the art & culture scene.

Well, we can’t teleport but we have the internet.

I’ve traveled extensively for business and pleasure. I’ve been to NYC several times over the last few years. Had family that lived there for a while. Got to see the famous streets, parks, landmarks, etc. I never could figure out why song writers and people like the OP get so maudlin over a crowded, smelly, dirty, decaying concrete jungle like that place. I guess if you were born there, that’s all you knew growing up. I guess I’m blessed that I knew open air and sunshine. I could never live there.

“Somewhere out there on that horizon
Out beyond the neon lights
I know there must be somethin’ better
But there’s nowhere else in sight
It’s survival in the city
When you live from day to day
City streets don’t have much pity
When you’re down, that’s where you’ll stay
In the city, oh, oh.
In the city
I was born here in the city
With my back against the wall
Nothing grows, and life ain’t very pretty
No one’s there to catch you when you fall
Somewhere out on that horizon
Faraway from the neon sky
I know there must be somethin’ better
And I can’t stay another night”
