Good points.
Dad had some interesting stories. Some sad, some funny.
Eaker
A FReepers grandaddy was Ira Eaker? That’s cool.
What did you do in Libya?
Wow! The rona doesn’t even compare!

Years ago some Publishers would buy books in standard sizes... writers had to meet the number of pages...which caused the puffing out effect you see in some older books. Apparently book bulk allowed them to charge more.
Was that when Reagan hit Kadaffi?
Victor Davis Hanson is a giant, towering in his field.
And its amusing that LS even attempted to review his effort obviously without a basic knowledge of the WW2 era and, consequently, being misinformed and, thus, not able to comprehend it. This review shows, that LS knowledge of history probably does not precede his birth date; and he has everything to learn from VDH, and VDH has nothing to learn from LS.
I’m a WW2 buff too and I think the juice is definitely worth the squeeze on this one.
VDH takes a different look at the war from statistics/numbers perspective.
The last paragraph basically gets it.
Thank you for the excellent review. I appreciate your analysis. You are correct to say that “World War II was actually two wars.” The American soldiers in both Europe and the Pacific were heroic and awe-inspiring.
One suggestion. I assert that it is false to state that the goal was not “to destroy the Jews as a force on planet earth,” since Hitler’s goal was to corrupt every human person on earth. Hitler’s goal was Satan’s goal: to prevent people from pleasing the Father through His Son. Proof: Hitler had a statue of Nietzsche. Thanks again. Awesome review.
You’re exactly right about how VDH presents it. It’s the best book on WW II that I’ve read.
My father, a Polish Jew, fought in the Red Army (severely wounded at Stalingrad, which actually saved his life...long story). He witnessed a low grade Soviet Officer (captain?/LT?) shoot 3 Red Army soldiers dead on the spot for looting (’44?). No trial, no hesitation, no repercussions, no big deal.
Entirely different universe than the West.
I have listened to Dan Carlin's ‘Supernova in the East” and many of his podcasts about WWI. It does seem difficult for an avowed leftist to apologize for the West, yet Carlin does a good job on the subject.
I will be getting VDH’s book as soon as finances improve, and will gladly add it to my VDH collection.
And MacArthur far too much...but he had a PR staff of close to 60,000, or there abouts. Walked through the surf when he returned to the Philippines 74 times before they ran out of film so he had to settle for one of those takes. Went to his grave bitching about that.
Geopolitik.
Thank you for sharing
The book follows on the course he did for Hillsdale. The structure of a dozen lectures is not the structure of a book and that might account for some of the criticism.
Mrs. jimfree (a Ph.D. historian herself) and I both thoroughly enjoyed the series of lectures. We have no immediate plans to read the book.
