Too bad NC doesnt have a real Governor, Id tell them the first day of school is August 17th. If they are not at their desk they will be in breach of contract and their paycheck will be stopped.
Teachers unions should be outlawed along with every other public sector unions.
Im a teacher in NC and waited somewhat anxiously this week for the governor to reveal his directive for returning to school. When I heard that he was going with Plan B, a hybrid of face to face and online instruction, I was deeply disappointed. On Thursday our local school board (Rockingham County) opted for total online instruction for at least the first month. Disappointment turned to resentment. It makes me feel like quitting.
I have known the joy of touching/changing lives, waking the sleeping to the life going on all around them, playing a part in the equipping of young people for the challenges that await. I have known, too, the impossibility of achieving these goals in the face of a broken, misguided, and often antithetical to learning system that public education has become. As a Christian, I have come to accept where the Lord has me and to be the salt and light there as best I can.
I will be entering my 26th year of teaching and do not want to end my career teaching from my basement! Few of my students did any work of any worth this past spring; I anticipate more of the same going forward.
I do not take my job, my responsibility as a teacher lightly. Ive always looked at it as the second most important job on earth (right after parenting). I was hoping to go out on my shield and now it looks as if I will go out being dragged at the back of Achilles chariot!
